Hi! PARIS Fellow Ioana Manolescu appointed to the Annual Chair in Computer Sciences and Digital Technologies at the Collège de France
We are pleased to highlight the appointment of Ioana Manolescu, Hi! PARIS Fellow and member of the Hi! PARIS Scientific Committee, to the prestigious Annual Chair in Computer Sciences and Digital Technologies at the Collège de France.
A researcher in computer science and member of the Cedar team at LIX (École polytechnique), Ioana Manolescu is internationally recognized for her work on data management, data integration, information extraction, and data analysis.
The annual chair, created in partnership with Inria, reflects the shared ambition of the Collège de France and Inria to showcase the importance of computer science and its role in addressing major scientific and societal challenges.
Data Management: Expressiveness and Performance
As part of the chair, Ioana Manolescu will develop a lecture series around “Data Management: Expressiveness and Performance.”
Her work explores the way digital data has become a representation of a vast range of human and physical activities, from economics, communications and healthcare to science and culture. The chair will examine how databases and data-processing systems continue to evolve as data becomes increasingly rich, complex and massive.
The program will address several major topics in modern data management, including:
- data storage, indexing and retrieval
- query optimization
- data integration
- data analysis for journalism
- open-source intelligence (OSINT)
- exploration and querying of tabular data
A particular focus will also be placed on applications in journalism, investigative reporting and fact-checking, illustrating the growing importance of data management beyond traditional computer science applications.
An opening lecture in February 2027
Ioana Manolescu will give her opening lecture, “Data: The Second Digital World,” on February 18, 2027, at the Collège de France.
The lecture series will then continue from February to April 2027, covering both the theoretical foundations and practical applications of modern data management.
This appointment is a major recognition of Ioana Manolescu’s scientific contributions and of the importance of research in data management at a time when data plays an increasingly central role in artificial intelligence, science and society.
